CULTURE AND HERITAGE

Located on the borders of Touraine, Poitou and Berry, La Roche-Posay and its surroundings offer a rich heritage and multiple centers of tourist interest:

The Medieval City of La Roche-Posay

La Roche-Posay was a fortified town in the Middle Ages of which there are vestiges:

  • The Bourbon Gate, emblem of the city
  • Notre Dame Church
  • The Keep, a powerful 12th century tower

Chauvigny
Authentic medieval city, 30 km from La Roche-Posay, Chauvigny will delight you with its 3 impressive fortresses which dominate the Vienne on their rocky outcrop, one of them sheltering in its ruins a falconry show open to the general public. The town, reserved for pedestrians in the summer season, offers a visit through narrow streets, castles and various museums, an inevitable break steeped in history.

Angles-sur-l'Anglin
The village of Angles-sur-l'Anglin (12km) has a rich heritage which has enabled it to meet the membership criteria of the association "The most beautiful villages of France". Its castle, perched on a promontory, offers one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the department. Animations around the Middle Ages are offered in the village. You can also discover the Roc aux Sorciers and its Magdalenian frieze: 15,000-year-old sculptures as spectacular as the cave paintings of Lascaux. www.roc-aux-sorciers.com

Saint-Savin Abbey
An exceptional treasure listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Abbey of Saint-Savin reveals all its secrets to you through guided tours. Among other things, you will discover the largest collection of unique Romanesque wall paintings in the world. www.abbaye-saint-savin.fr

The Regional Natural Park of La Brenne
It is home to no less than 267 species of migratory birds. Don't miss the marvels of the "land of a thousand ponds" as well as the rural architecture of the Brenne natural park, the Château d'Azay-le-Ferron, the Plaincourault chapel in Mérigny, the Naillac château in Le Blanc... Lovers of old stones, you will be amazed!

Elms Castle
Located between Tours and Poitiers, the Château des Ormes is a magnificent testimony to the Age of Enlightenment. Thanks to its architecture, its remarkable decorations and its collections, it is a place to visit but also a place for receptions and a popular setting for cultural events.

Ethni’Cité, a troglodyte village nestled in the cliffs of Saint Rémy sur Creuse, overlooks the Creuse valley. The site has inspired history enthusiasts grouped together in an association since the 1990s.

The history of the royal city of Loches will fascinate you: built on the banks of the Indre, this unique monument covering a thousand years of history, is defended by its 36 m high keep built in the 10th century and considered today as one of the best preserved from the Romanesque period in Europe.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Loire Valley has some of France's finest treasures. It is on the banks of the river that the monarchy built the renowned Châteaux de la Loire, true jewels of French heritage: Azay le Rideau, Amboise, Chenonceau (about 80 km) and so many others! www.loire-chateaux.org
